I was going to make a visa run to Danang, Vietnam but my visa was expired. I had read the dd/mm/yy date as a mm/dd/yy date. I got to the airport and the check-in agent told me my visa was expired. I was embarrassed by my mistake and it ended up costing me. I booked a flight and hotel for Georgetown in Penang, Malaysia instead. Malaysia has a easy visa process for US citizens where you fill out a online form and get a 90 day visa.
It turned out nicely in the end. Georgetown, Malaysia is a quiet city but is culturally fascinating. There are signs of Indian, Chinese and Malay culture here and English is widely spoken. The food is excellent including a type of food called Nyonya cuisine. There’s probably a ton of history here too. It might be worth making another trip here instead of just a visa run.
A part of Old Town, Georgetown that is a little bit “shabby chic”.

Below is a more colorful block.

Must be a Hindu temple. Looks similar to one I saw in South India.

There’s a lot of street art in the city.

The below show the Chinese influence in Penang.
