The Beach

First lets talk about Western male fashion at the beach. Maybe I’ll just give some observations.

  • The middle aged guy in white linen pants and a white linen shirt, walking by the pool. He looked “distinguished”. We give each other a knowing nod.
  • Ok guys, let’s not do the string bikini.
  • The younger guy with the circular glasses, unkempt hair and floral shirt completely unbuttoned at the bar.

My impression of Ao Nang was that the same things happen every night. A mix of younger backpacker types and couples come into town and stay a few days.

It is a good party town, that’s not as over the top as Patong but still has a few clubs with DJ’s spinning a mix of pop, techno and Western/ International music.

The people party and get a little bit rowdy but nothing too major. The bar is open air and at night the heat is tolerable and there may be a slight breeze.

It’s the gentle, easy, laid back beach party town that just relaxes you, but doesn’t scream at you to stay too long.

But the scenery is majestic. The karst cliffs and palm trees create scenes that open the mind to wonder, how was such a scene created? The quote below from “The Great Gatsby” comes to mind, even though it refers explicitly to the New World and America. I feel like the scenery is commensurate to a capacity for wonder.

Just thinking about the scenery calms my mind.

“For a transitory enchanted moment, man must have held his breath in the presence of this continent, compelled into an aesthetic contemplation he neither understood nor desired, face to face for the last time in history with something commensurate to his capacity for wonder.” F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, Chapter 12

Ha, now that I think about it, maybe Mr Linen is a modern day Gatsby.

Ao Nang, Krabi and Railay Beach, Krabi
